Do you ever get the blahs? Where you feel like a living version of the word “meh” and you can’t get interested in any of the things you usually like to do? July was like that for me. I didn’t write any letters, and I didn’t finish a single book all month. I started quite a few, but every book I picked up lost my interest within the first couple chapters.
If you happen to be the author of one of these books, don’t feel bad. This isn’t a reflection on your book, probably. I put all of these DNFs (Did Not Finish) back on my To Be Read pile. So eventually I’ll get around to reading your book and giving it the flippant, poorly thought out review it most likely doesn’t deserve.
Here are the DNFs from my bout with the summer blahs:
On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong
The Porpoise by Mark Haddon
Taft by Ann Patchett
Artemis by Andy Weir
Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich
The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms
The Hours by Michael Cunningham
A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling
If you’ve read any of these, let me know what you thought! Which ones are worth another try?
Hi Jessica,
The only one on your list that I read was Nickel and Dimed. I really liked it. In fact so much that I have purchased three more of her books!
I want to suggest a book to you that I think you would like. A friend suggested it and I thought “Nah, never going to read that!”. Then it was on sale for $5 at the bookstore so I decided to give it a try. Loved it! So interesting, learned things I never knew and wouldn’t have guessed. The book is called “The Soul of an Octopus” by Sy Montgomery. You will not believe what you learn about octopus.
Let me know if you give it a try. We had your Dad and TJ here for dinner last night. Great to see them.

I’m so jealous about dinner! Thanks for the recommendation; I’ll definitely add that book to my list.

I have not read any of those. But, I did just read a graphic novel called “The Best We Could Do”. Angela recommended it and I always enjoy items she has recommended. Others were “Blind Assassin”, “Prodigal Summer”, and “Live, My Son”.
